Story

Many of the dogs that we save from the streets will be with us for the rest of their lives. Many will wait years for a home. For all of our dogs no matter how long they are with us we want to create a 'home from home' environment for them, giving them warmth and comfort and stimulation as we as a safe quiet spaces so they can live their very best lives.

We plan to knock down and rebuild an area of dog housing which currently houses 12 dogs. We will expand the area to house 22 dogs and create a sensory garden space to service this new housing block. We also plan to provide a heating/cooling system at the facility for all of the 86 dogs across the site to combat the 45 degree summers and arctic temperature winters.

Our working partners are able and willing and under our management completed the new sanctuary block with us in 2024 with ease and expertise. Our Co Chair Maria project managed the Hans Haven Sanctuary Block build and will oversee the entire process for this next phase and will be on the ground in Bosnia later this month with a small volunteer team.

The new space will require expanding and levelling out. The land will be built up and reinforced with concrete before the construction can take place. Building on our experience of the development of the Sanctuary Block build we will use thermo panels for the walls and 40% glass fire doors to allow light in but keep the dogs warm overnight. During the day they will run free in the newly allocated sensory green space that we create for them which will be outfitted with ramps, paddling pools and sensory plants.

The houses will require vet flooring and we plane to include a small log cabin to get dogs socialised for adoption. This expansion from 12 to 22 will enable us to move 10 dogs over from the last remaining older block on site and relieve the pressure in that area. The older block will be the final area we will upgrade in the future.

This development will change the lives of our dogs immeasurably in a sensory and physical capacity. Welfare is our priority and we strive to lead by example and establish western standards in Bosnia. As the facility is improved we will then be able to host Open Days and capitalise on the support offered by the UK Embassy in Bosnia and the Bosnian Embassy in the UK and hold education and socialisation days. The new space will provide a vital legacy for dogs. By donating you will be helping us build a better life for dogs in need. Any excess funds will be go to core costs for everyday care of the dogs.
