Story
At Mayatan, we have always dreamed big and our school library is no exception. Our ultimate goal is to be able to open up our library resources to the entire community in our town here in Copan Ruinas, Honduras. We are quite a way off of this, but that is where we're aiming.
Our current situation is that, due in large part to the incredible generosity and dedication of one of our teachers, Mr. John Weber, we have recently been able to open our new school library. It is an magnificent space that we envisage being used in the same way that school and public libraries are commonly used in the US and Europe. The same notion of what a library can be used for does not exist in Honduras, but we have a plan and we would like your help with the next very important step!
We have made huge efforts and taken time to download thousands of freely available electronic resources. These resources include electronic books, audio books, and video files that our teachers have spent time organizing by content and grade level. The resources are superb and have the potential to really help with our students' education but we do not have a way to get the material into their hands!
So, how can you help us? We would like to ask for your help with paying for the IT hardware required for our students to be able to use what we already have available. We need computers and e-readers (Kindles). Specifically, we want to buy 2 computers that we can dedicate to managing the files that we already have and to which we will keep adding, and 2 complete sets of Kindles for our students to use for reading, listening and watching the materials.
What's our plan beyond that? Well, we will take the time to allow our students and staff to become familiar with the new materials and the new space. We will then expand towards allowing for borrowing and taking the materials home so that they can be used by our students' families too. Once we have that working well, we hope to invite students and teachers from other schools to use our library and resources. Then, eventually, we hope that we are able to expand this offering to the wider community.
Right now though, we are asking for help with the next step of this dream.
We will most gratefully accept any help that you can give. If you are unable to give financially but would like to help, please share our campaign with your friends, family and contacts!
¡Gracias!
