Life in the Congo is harsh. People are fleeing their homes at a worrying pace, as worsening violence and rampant ebola, polio and cholera destroys lives and livelihoods across the country. Latest reports are that over 800,000 people have left the country since 1994.
The new refugees settle wherever they are welcome, including Tazania, Uganda and Zambia.
We are anticipating an influx of over 50,000 refugees by the end of 2018 from the Congo in Zambia alone. One area where the new refugees will be settles is in a camp called Meheba in Northern Zambia.
During a visit to Zambia September 17-20 we met with the representatives of UNHCR and UNICEF in Zambia and discussed the situation. They are willing to work with ADRA Zambia to help refugees in the Meheba camp.
This is an older camp and in desperate need of refurbishment. The Meheba Refugee Camp was opened in 1971 near the borders of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola. The camp is situated 75 km from Solwezi, the Provincial Headquarters of the North-Western Province.
We have helped ADRA Zambia setup a sub-office at the camp to coordinate the work of ADRA in this camp. ADRA is now working in the Meheba camp, in order to provide refugees with education, health and agricultural facilities, so that they could one day go back home, integrate locally or settle in a third country.
To setup the sub-office and have one staff member attending coordination meetings and position ADRA to work with UNHCR and UNICEF in the camp we need £10,000. This would provide a one-year budget.
When I was there we promised ADRA Zambia to find the money. We now have a working office in Meheba. Will you help support this important project in Zambia?
