SHINE make a huge difference to the experience of service users cared for in our hospital sites and community services across the North East and Cumbria. Donations can provide the support for the extra things that would not be possible from funding we receive from central government alone.

Story

Every day, the Memory and Later Life Services support older adults facing memory loss and mental health challenges, as well as the families who care for them. Our services already provide vital assessment, diagnosis, and treatment, and your donations help add extra resources to make an even bigger impact.

Our occupational therapists use meaningful activities as part of routine, person-centred care, assessment, and treatment, helping service users maintain skills, promote independence, stimulate cognition, and enhance wellbeing. These activities also offer opportunities to socialise, connect, and feel engaged, which can reduce feelings of isolation and improve quality of life.

We run a variety of groups to support service users and carers, including:

- Wellbeing groups

- Monthly carer groups

- Recovery Through Activity groups

- Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) groups

- Deep group (part of the Dementia Engagement and Empowerment Project, enabling service users and carers to have their say on how services can be improved or shaped)

These groups are designed to benefit both service users and carers. Service users can take part in meaningful, stimulating activities while carers gain support, share experiences, and access guidance to help their loved ones. The deep group also ensures both service users and carers can have their voices heard in shaping services.

In addition, we provide education and support within care homes, helping staff understand memory difficulties and mental health needs, and improve care for residents.

Funds raised will go towards materials and resources for activities, wellbeing sessions, and all our groups — enhancing the support already provided and helping to promote care and independence for service users while supporting carers. Every donation, no matter how small, helps enhance care and independence for service users while supporting carers.

If you’re unable to donate, sharing this page can also help us reach people who can support our work.

Fundraising Target: £1,000

This will help provide extra resources and equipment for meaningful activities, wellbeing sessions, and all our specialist groups, building on the excellent care already offered by Memory and Later Life Services.
