College Tribe is a STEMentoring organization that cultivates the character, scholarship and social capital of 3rd to 8th grade boys in Washington DC . Our target is on 3rd to 8th grade boys in Ward 7 and 8 in D.C. Sixty percent of 8th graders in our target area vanish from the school system before starting 10th grade (CollegeandCareerConnections.org, June 2013.). Only 40% of youth who enter 9th grade graduate from high school; more than half who drop out do so during the 9th grade ("The Schott 50 State Report on Public Education and Black Males–2012.”). Only 5% of Ward 7 and 8 youth who complete 9th grade go on to earn a college degree ("The Schott 50 State Report on Public Education and Black Males–2012.”). College Tribe has very specific outcomes that we strive for: Our 8th grade boys being accepted to a college prep high school and our 5th grade boys being accepted into a high performing middle school. Over the short term, we strive for: At least 75% percent of our students achieve an average of 80% on their STEM tests 75% of student achieve at least a B in math. 75 % of the boys doubles the amount of careers and colleges they can name Each student completes a Goals Statement

Story

We are underway into our 13th year of providing services and opportunities to 3rd to 8th grade boys east of the Anacostia river. This year we have a Mentor Manager who has recruited 23 new mentors to our ranks which vastly expands our ability to work with the boys.

After 13 years we are still finding new and exciting places to take the boys: On October 13th we went to the Kids Museum in Bethesda and this Saturday November 10th we are doing a Scavenger Hunt at the American History Museum.

On October 27th the mentors did a presentation on Black Inventors and Inventions. We have a trip to a working farm, a pirate ship, a play at Imagination Stage and a Dance Performance at Dance Place in February.

The goal is to give the boys experiences that they may not otherwise have; to teach the boys how to successfully navigate the world.

These things are expensive, each bus trip is $400; lunch for 15-20 boys is $150; then there is the admission price for our various adventures. We need your help to make these experiences happen. Pick the experience you would like to help with and help us make this happen.
