Story

Mike DeLashmit was a beacon to those engaged in welding, metallurgy and field engineering, serving as a mentor in Thornton Tomasetti for more than 25 years. As the firm’s foremost expert on field engineering, he guided countless professionals with his calm, confident and compassionate manner.

Mike's role at Thornton Tomasetti was multifaceted. He was not only a problem solver and a highly skilled professional but also committed to the personal growth of everyone at Thornton Tomasetti. Mike was always available to share generously of his knowledge, no matter how big or small the problem was. His integrity, detail-oriented approach, commitment to excellence, and approachable disposition made him a beloved figure on job sites. He could communicate complex engineering concepts as easily to owners as he could to structural engineers, architects, construction executives, welders, iron workers, and other tradespeople. He applied his real-world expertise with fairness, for the good of the project, always helping all parties solve problems that arise.

During Mike’s tumultuous youth, it was the welding education he undertook Lake Land College in Illinois that laid the foundation of his technical expertise that allowed him to become the field engineering expert and mentor that we all knew and respected.

The scholarship in Mike’s name will support future generations of aspiring welders and field engineers to pursue the same education that catapulted Mike towards a lifetime of learning, a passion for technical excellence and leadership in the life and culture of field construction.

This scholarship will assist recipients in their pursuit of the education that will help them rise like a Phoenix above the challenges they will face in their careers, transforming their potential into soaring achievements in field engineering, just as it did for Mike.
