Project 1018

Organised by Team Forever

6 events. 591-miles. 1 goal. Father of two, endurance athlete and philanthropist Darren Miller will raise the bar for an epic journey across the country to raise vital funding to refurbish his childhood playground in Creighton, Pennsylvania.

Since 2009, Team Forever has fundraised for the Forever Fund at the UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. We also channel funds to improve the quality of life in our community - through repairing trails, improving stream life and increasing green space.

Story

The playground next to 1018 Railroad Street in Creighton, Pennsylvania, had a significant impact on my life. Next to my grandparent's home along the tracks, the trains would run day and night - evoking past memories of the Pittsburgh steel industry.

I have fond memories playing with my brother, relatives and other children who lived in the small neighborhood. My grandparents were part of the 'greatest generation' - hard work, dedication and sacrifice were part of their daily routine.

In memory of their strong example of dedication to God, family and community, I want to refurbish their playground and surrounding land along the stream.

These updates will include:

1. Install a 30x60 'half court' basketball blacktop with two hoops.

2. Build a 115-foot fence for safety.

3. Refurbish the old swing set/see-saw, and install bleachers.

4. Clear brush and trees from the stream area.

Any connections to assist with paving, fencing, a set of bleachers, or playground equipment would be greatly appreciated!

In December 2009, my friend, Cathy Cartieri-Mehl and I created the 'Forever Fund' at the UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and began fundraising through our own non-profit, Team Forever. Cathy's family sponsored my English Channel crossing, and from there, with the financial assistance of the Trustmont Financial Group, I accomplished the 'Oceans Seven' in August 2013.

My journey was highlighted in the 2020 Guinness Book of World Records, voted top 'Extreme Weather Adventurer' in a Weather Channel series and an 'Everyday Hero' in Men's Health. The accolades mean nothing, as the true success of my 17-year journey has been supporting families from across the US, and those who travel from around the world for their children's care.

It is the passion of my life to give back by any means necessary.
