These goggles and mittens belonged to Major Herbert 'Blondie' Hasler and were used on Operation Frankton, the seminal raid on German shipping in Bordeaux Harbour that took place in December 1942.

Operation Frankton was a Royal Marine Commando operation which took place between 7 & 12 December 1942. The raid was undertaken by men of the secretive Royal Marines Boom Patrol Detachment led by Major 'Blondie' Hasler. The plan was for twelve Royal Marines in six two-man canoes to be dropped by submarine at the Gironde estuary, paddle twenty-three nautical miles to Bordeaux at night, plant limpet mines on German vessels and escape overland to Spain. One canoe was torn when deploying from the submarine, HMS Tuna, so only five launched. Of the ten men that went, six were captured and executed and two died of hypothermia. Only Haslar and his No.2, Bill Sparks, survived.

Hasler was awarded a DSO and Sparks the DSM. Hasler's concepts and operational approach laid the groundwork for the post-war Special Boat Service. Lord Mountbatten, Commander of Combined Operations, said of these events "Of the many brave and dashing raids carried out by the men of Combined Operations Command none was more courageous or imaginative than Operation Frankton".

The events around this operation were immortalised in the 1955 film, 'The Cockleshell Heroes'.
