Story

Pakistan ranks 153 out of 156 on the gender parity index. Due to such gender disparity in Pakistan, female literacy remains a major issue. In provinces such as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the total literacy rate is 55%, yet female literacy in rural villages is an appalling 33%. In certain rural villages, such as Mohandari in Mansehra district, seldom are adult females fully literate.

Like many villages in the Mansehra district, female literacy is worsened by issues such as economic hardship and severe impoverishment. Though most pupils parents, even at Star School Mohandari, do have professions, diharidar, it is not enough to maintain their households.

This has unfortunately acted as a catalyst for child labour, as in the case with other rural villages in Mansehra district. Most children are tasked with work such as vegetable vendors, or as farmers (kisaan). Because of this, a plethora of children hailing from different backgrounds in the local community have never been given proper access to education facilities.

However, as part of their campaign to promote educational literacy, PAGE has addressed the matter by setting up Star School Mohandari. Moreover, the schools respective teacher Kawanl Bibi is playing a vital role in facilitating, enrolling economically challenged students into the school.

Star School Mohandari has now 31 students, with 15 boys and 16 girls. It is one of many initiatives PAGE has embarked on to empower females and promote girls literacy not only in Mansehra, but in Pakistan as a whole. Star School Mohandari has made it their top priority of providing education to disabled pupils.

Furthermore, PAGE has offered many STAR students parents hope that their children will finally break the cycle of poverty and generational illiteracy.
