On 26 August a glacial lake burst high on the Nepal-Tibet border

The flood rushed down the Trishuli valley within minutes. It took the roads, 41 bridges, thousands of homes and tragically more than a thousand lives.

Villages in the hills above are still cut off. Roads in are blocked. Many villagers have no electricity and no phone signal. Some can be reached only on foot or by helicopter.

Three REACT Responders reached Kathmandu on 30 August. They have been working tirelessly alongside HAPSA Nepal and other humanitarian organisations to support the locally-led response.

2,000 hygiene kits, sourced in Nepal

Three hundred Nepali volunteers are packing kits in HAPSA’s facility - soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, sanitary pads, mosquito repellent, rehydration salts, water disinfection – up to 600 kits produced per day. The bag itself is waterproof and doubles as a water carrier. Almost everything inside is made in Nepal and bought direct from the manufacturers, so a batch takes hours rather than weeks. REACT has so far funded 2,000 of the 5,000 kits our partner HAPSA Nepal is delivering.

Six generators, delivered to villages with no road access

Briddhim, Lingling, Sherpa Gau and Benjang. A generator means villagers can charge phones, tell someone what they need, reach families who don't know whether they're okay, and start organising their own recovery. Two more are bought and waiting for transport.

Kits carried in by road and by air

On 3 September two of our Responders travelled 16 hours by 4x4 to Kalikasthan, carrying 100 hygiene kits. The same day a helicopter took 200 more, plus cooking oil and four generators, to four cut-off villages.

What your donation does now

• £5 buys a hygiene kit so a family of five can wash, brush their teeth, keep the mosquitoes off and manage periods with dignity.

• £190 buys a generator so a cut-off village can charge phones, call for what it needs, and get through the night with lighting.

• Buying in Nepal means supplies move in hours, not weeks, and the money stays in the Nepali economy. But with the bridges gone, the last few miles - by helicopter, by 4x4, on foot - are the most challenging part of the journey. Your donation helps us travel the hardest miles.

The Government of Nepal is leading this response. Our role right now is to support Nepali organisations, reach the places that are hardest to get to, and deliver all the support we can.

Rapid Response Fund

Donations support REACT's humanitarian response to the Nepal floods through our Rapid Response Fund. If we cannot use all funds raised for this response, they will support REACT's wider charitable work through the Fund - training, resourcing and equipping REACT to respond to future disasters.
