Story

Supporting Evidence-Led Change in Scotland's Legal Profession

Why this matters

Nigerian Lawyers in Scotland (NLIS) was established to support, connect and empower legal professionals and aspiring lawyers across Scotland.

Over the years, many conversations have taken place about diversity, inclusion, representation and career progression within the legal profession. While valuable work has already been undertaken across the sector, there remains a need to better understand the lived experiences, opportunities and challenges faced by minority ethnic legal professionals in Scotland.

Too often, important discussions are driven by individual experiences and anecdotal evidence. We believe meaningful and lasting change is best supported by robust evidence.

Our Goal

NLIS is raising £5,000 towards the first phase of an independent research project examining the experiences, representation and professional progression of Nigerian and minority ethnic legal professionals in Scotland.

The research will explore:

• Representation across the profession

• Career progression and development opportunities

• Barriers and challenges experienced by legal professionals

• Inclusion, visibility and belonging within the sector

• Opportunities for positive change and future engagement

Why Research Matters

Good decisions are built on good evidence.

The findings from this project will help inform constructive engagement with legal institutions, employers, policymakers, community organisations and other stakeholders.

By gathering reliable data and lived experiences, we hope to contribute to informed conversations that support inclusion, opportunity and professional development across Scotland's legal sector.

Every experience matters. Every voice counts. Every insight has the potential to drive positive change.
