Story

Since 2009 we have developed world leading expertise in creating & delivering inspiring playgrounds & play programmes to help vulnerable children learn, develop & heal.

And now in 2023, we will create the PLAY-BASED NURSERY OF THE FUTURE! A template for early years education across Africa. The majority of classroom structures in this part of the world are made from corrugated iron. Spaces are dark, cramped, hot, and uninspiring. We want to reinvent the way that classrooms are built to work better with the environment and ensure children have the best possible environment to learn and grow.

The Problem

120 amazing children attend this dark, derelict, and frankly dangerous nursery in Kisumu, Kenya, every day. Why? Because these children and their parents know that a quality education is their best chance of a life free from poverty in the future.

This project was initiated by Peter Rahal, a keen supporter of Play Action International who recently volunteered with us in Kenya. Whilst helping to build a playground at the neighbouring school, Peter spotted the dilapidated corrugated iron structure nearby and wandered over to investigate..

I wandered over and found small children in a dark, confined space with very little daylight. It was a sight that deeply affected me and I felt a sense of sadness, leaving me feeling compelled to do something. It seemed to me that this was a situation that could be transformed. I contacted Play Actions CEO and had a conversation about how we could build a proper nursery.

The Solution

Fast forward to present day, and we are building a brand new nursery! But not just any nursery... we're creating a ground-breaking early years educational setting that inspires a lifelong passion for learning.

We are working with the amazing CAUKIN who have brought our vision to life with this crescent shaped nursery building which centres around a safe outdoor space for play and learning, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor spaces. The building will have 3 classrooms for the 3 different ages of the children at the nursery (Pre Primary I, Pre Primary II, and Play Group), and the raised roof will allow for plenty of ventilation and natural light. At the childrens request, there will be plenty of colour incorporated into the design too!

This nursery will blur the boundaries between outdoor play & indoor learning to create a seamless experience for children that supports teachers to deliver the early years curriculum most effectively. The design will incorporate various types of playful interventions, each with different levels of difficulty and stimulation whilst providing teachers with the necessary tools for classroom learning. It will be an environment that engages all the children's senses & supports all areas of their development. The nursery will incorporate spatial features that provide opportunities to explore the 5 elements of play: Physical Play, Social Play, Constructive Play, Fantasy Play, and Games with Rules.

The nursery will be built using locally sourced materials that blend with the local environment and at a cost that is equal or less than an equivalent government built nursery.
