Friends of King Alfred Buses are raising £500,000 to restore rare chassisless Olympic JAA 708.

The iconic chassisless underfloor-engined Leyland Olympic that was JAA 708 in the famous fleet of King Alfred Motor services in Winchester is to be rebuilt. This restoration will see as much of the original vehicle as possible retained.

Friends of King Alfred Buses was formed in 1985 to assist in the preservation of two KAMS buses. Since then we now have over 16 King Alfred buses and coaches, with the help of volunteers from over 220 members and wish to ensure their place in transport history.

Story

Friends of King Alfred Buses (a registered charity) is delighted to commence this campaign, to restore this iconic chassis-less underfloor-engined Leyland Olympic JAA 708 in the famous fleet of King Alfred Motor Services in Winchester.

A 3-year programme has been evolved, which will see as much of the original vehicle as possible retained, but a great deal of rebuilding will need to be done, much of it repeating the work that was done by FoKAB's volunteers in the 10 years leading up to 2012.

This work is necessary following a tragic fire on 8 December 2023 at Penton Mewsey, but JAA 708 is 'a survivor' and we look forward to the completion of this restoration, when once again, JAA 708 will grace the streets of Winchester at our Running days.
