Win a fabulous piece of art and help protect Orkney's amazing cetaceans
Orkney is an amazing place to see whales, dolphins and porpoises. However, despite these magnificent marine mammals being present year-round in Orkney waters, little is known about residency patterns and abundance levels within our waters or the impact of localised anthropogenic (caused by human activity) pressures on these.
One example of the key research we are carrying out is our Longhope Harbour Porpoise Project. Every Autumn sees a huge gathering of the UK's smallest cetacean and OMMRI is undertaking a long-term project to research the reasons for this annual aggregation. We hope that the evidence we gather will conserve and protect this important species and their habitat.
You can help us fund this important project as well as our other research by supporting our birthday fund raiser.
Talented local artist Shiva Whitehead has created this stunning killer whale painting especially for OMMRI and it could be yours. Ready framed, it measures 81cm x 64cm.
For every £10 you donate your name will be entered once into the draw so the more you donate, the higher your chances of winning.
All donations are welcome so, if you'd rather donate a smaller amount, we'd be very grateful. Although not eligible for the draw, you'll still have the satisfaction of knowing that you have contributed to the conservation of the diminutive harbour porpoise or the mighty killer whale.
