OMRA is a small volunteer-based charity which uses a grocery card fundraising program and tax-deductible donations to help recently arrived refugees and asylum seekers get established. OMRA has been operating since 2001. OMRA also partners with other like-minded, non-profit organizations to understand the obstacles to affordable housing in Ottawa, to look for solutions and to identify opportunities for joint advocacy. Our advocacy efforts involve maintaining current information on housing policies and regulations, identifying and meeting with key decision-makers, sharing information with groups such as Refugee 613’s Task Force on Housing, and supporting targeted advocacy actions. OMRA does not engage in partisan political activities.

OMRA is funded by donations and run by volunteers!! In 2024 OMRA offered more than $160,000 in monthly rental subsidies to 47 qualified refugee households and some asylum seekers.

OMRA also offers volunteer English tutors and arranges some delightful annual gatherings such as our annual picnic where canoe rides are enjoyed by many. Last year, one of the elder refugees said, "This is the best day of my life!" as she waded to shore after her first ever canoe ride.
