Story
Women who street sex work in Bristol experience some of the most persistent forms of homelessness in the city. Last year, 95% of the women we supported were homeless. Whilst having no safe place to stay, they also face domestic abuse, sexual violence, addiction, and chronic mental and physical ill-health. These overlapping challenges create major barriers to moving out of homelessness. One25 acts at the vital link, supporting women to navigate complex systems and advocate for their needs.
The UK Government's National Plan to End Homelessness (2025) recognises that women experiencing overlapping disadvantages are more likely to face long-term, recurrent homelessness. Women who street sex work are disproportionately represented in this group yet are often excluded from mainstream services due to stigma, mixed-gender environments, and support that is not flexible enough to meet their needs.
Bristol's 2024 women's census revealed widespread hidden homelessness, identifying 23 times more unhoused women than official counts. This is because the women we support are often sofa-surfing, or getting in cars, going from house to house, never stopping to rest because it is not safe enough to do so.
Team One25 will sleep out for one night to show our support, whilst remembering that for Bristol's hidden women, 'sleeping' isn't even an option. They stay awake to stay alive.
