Story
What Makes a Home?
A house is more than just walls and a roof.
A home is warmth. Protection.. Safety.
A place where someone can finally breathe again.
At Community Foundation Wakefield District, we support people who fall through the cracks — with no judgment, no lengthy forms, and no barriers to getting help.
Many of the families and individuals we help are fleeing crisis situations. They may be escaping domestic abuse, recovering from a house fire, leaving unsafe living conditions, or facing sudden homelessness.
When they reach emergency or temporary accommodation, they often arrive with nothing but the clothes they are wearing.
No bed.
No kettle.
No towels.
No toys for their children.
And yet, this is where they are expected to begin again.
Why Our House Matters
Imagine trying to rebuild your life without the basics.
Would you be able to sleep without bedding?
Make a cup of tea without a kettle?
Keep warm in winter with no curtains?
Help your child feel settled with no toys or school supplies?
These are small items — but they make a world of difference.
Our House is our year-long mission to make sure that when someone is given a roof over their head, they are also given the essentials they need to turn that house into a home.
The average cost of a care package is £470 for an entire family, and we distribute around 9 every week. We need to raise funds for this vital service to continue being a safety net for the Wakefield District.
How the Campaign Works
Every month in 2026, we will focus on one part of the home — raising funds for the basic items people need most.
We’re encouraging micro-giving: small, specific donations that feel tangible and achievable.
Monthly Focus Themes
February – Tea Time (kettles, toasters – kitchen)
March – The Spring Clean (mops, cleaning supplies – cleaning cupboard)
April – Bedtime (duvets, pillows – bedroom)
May – Food for Thought (microwaves, air fryers – kitchen)
June – Clean as a Whistle (towels, toiletries – bathroom)
July – Blackout (curtains, blinds – bedroom)
August – Back to School (stationery, supplies – desk)
September – Half-Baked (pots, pans, baking trays – kitchen)
October – Smarty Pants (smart clothes, school wear – bedroom)
November – The Toy Story (toys for children – kids’ bedroom)
December – Winter Warmth (blankets, warm clothes – living room)
Every month, every room, every donation helps rebuild a life.
How Your Money Helps
We keep it simple.
Your “change” changes lives — right here in the Wakefield District.
£5 buys a lamp so a child doesn’t have to do homework in the dark
£10 buys a kettle to make a cup of tea
£15 buys a full dining set for a family of four
£25 buys a brand-new warm duvet and pillow set
£50 buys a microwave to help a family cook low-cost meals
£100 completely kits out a child’s bedroom
Each item becomes part of someone’s fresh start.
Our Goal
We’re hoping to raise £2,750 over the course of the year to help local people through some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
Every penny stays within the Wakefield District.
Every donation supports someone rebuilding from a crisis.
Every gift helps turn an empty house into a safe home.
If You Can’t Donate
We understand not everyone is in a position to give.
You can still help by:
Sharing this page
Telling friends and family
Raising awareness about the realities faced by people starting again
Spreading the word is just as powerful.
Thank You
From all of us at Community Foundation Wakefield District — and from every person who will sleep in a warm bed, make their first cup of tea, or watch their child play again…
Thank you for helping us build more than houses.
