1,944km to Support Out & About Archaeology

This May, CBA staff and trustees will walk a combined 1,944km, to commemorate the year the CBA was founded, to celebrate the archaeology that surrounds us and raise vital funds to support our work through Out and About Archaeology and beyond

The Council for British Archaeology is an educational charity, working throughout the UK to involve people in archaeology and to promote the appreciation and care of the historic environment. As a small independent organisation, we rely on funding and donations to continue our vital work.

Story

In 1944 the Council for British Archaeology (CBA) was founded to inspire people to explore our shared human story. Now, 80 years later, we’re taking a step back ... and forward.

This May, CBA staff and trustees will walk a combined 1,944km, commemorating the year the CBA was founded, to celebrate the archaeology that surrounds us and raise vital funds to support our work through Out and About Archaeology and beyond.

Because archaeology isn’t just about the past, it’s about people. It's about understanding who we are, how we live, and how we shape the world around us.

Why We're Walking:

To help people uncover the past.

At the Council for British Archaeology, we work to break down barriers so that more people can discover and share the stories that connect us to the places we live.

From our nationwide Festival of Archaeology and online resources to local partnerships and advocacy, we champion access to archaeology. We create real opportunities for people from different walks of life to take part, tell their stories, and find meaning in the traces of the past.

To bring archaeology to life for thousands of young people.

Through our Young Archaeologists’ Clubs and Youth Advisory Board, we create spaces where young people can connect with each other and heritage, building confidence, gaining skills, and having fun.

“Being able to take part in activities on my favourite subject with other people who enjoy it as well. Because I feel included, in a way I don’t feel in most environments, and I can be myself.

To help reimagine the places that matter.

Every building, street, and landscape holds traces of the people who shaped it. Through our casework, we help bring those stories into conversations about change, from small planning decisions to national policy.

We work with communities, local authorities, and volunteers to make sure archaeology is part of how places evolve, not an afterthought. Whether it’s adapting an old building, responding to a development, or shaping how decisions are made, we help people champion the character, history, and potential of the places they care about.

But we can't do it alone.
