Our Christmas appeal for 2023 is aimed at raising £12,000 to allow eight bore holes with simple rope hand pumps to be constructed in rural districts of the Kigoma region, Western Tanzania.
A high proportion of rural Tanzanians still have little access to safe water, which leads to poor health, loss of productivity and worsening poverty. 40% of schools have no water supply and a third of health centres have no safe on-site water supply or sanitation facilities.
The bore holes are dug and bored out using skilled local people and brick and stone is supplied by the community. As the pumps are of simple design, repair is easy.
Serving schools, these wells will allow children to use and collect clean water to take home and eliminate the need for lengthy walks to dirty shallow ponds and streams. This will bring health benefits and additional time in school, improving educational outcomes.
Six of the eight boreholes will be at the following primary schools with no current water supply:- Munzeze (920 pupils), Kishanga (1200 pupils), Kitanga (1320 pupils), Shunguliba (720 pupils), Mkiyange (680 pupils), and Mgandazi school (1100 pupils).
The two additional boreholes will be village based, again neither has adequate water supply. One will be at Kishoko (3800 people), and the other at Muganza ( 7600 people).
In total the bore holes will give 17,500 people direct access to safe water.
To deliver the project we will be partnering with the Tanzanian Development Trust who we have successfully worked with before.
As always all donations from this appeal will be passed to the project without any deductions.
