Growing Connections - Sensory Garden at Painshill

A SENSORY GARDEN FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH DEMENITA AND ADDITONAL NEEDS.

Painshill is a Grade 1 listed landscape that was left to ruin after World War II. Painshill Park Trust was established by Elmbridge Borough Council with advice and activity from the Garden History Society and other Heritage Groups.

Story

Our aim is to create a calm, peaceful garden where people living with dementia and additional needs can feel safe, welcomed, and comfortable in nature.

A space shaped with care that is calm, grounding, and gently stimulating, it will support, wellbeing, memory, and meaningful moments of connection.

This space is also for the people who journey alongside them, carers, families, friends, and anyone who finds traditional outdoor spaces challenging. A place where they, too, can pause, breathe, and share unhurried time together.

A garden that holds every pace, every moment, every mind with dignity and warmth.

There are very few outdoor spaces in Elmbridge and Surrey that are designed with people living with dementia or other additional needs in mind. As a result, many face real barriers to safely accessing and engaging with nature. Research shows that time in nature can ease anxiety, reduce agitation, and support memory recall, all helping people feel more grounded and present, allowing them to feel what is around them.

There is also a growing need for calm, accessible spaces where carers and families, can rest, recharge and simply be together without pressure or hurry.
