Story

In 1964 Cheltenham Civic Society received an extraordinary gift from Lord Parmoor – his residential property in the Montpellier area of the town. The Society used this as its HQ for nearly 60 years, only selling it in 2022 to purchase a more central property in the town centre, better suited to the needs of the Society. The new property – a Regency villa now called ‘Parmoor’ – had been severely damaged by fire in 1926, when it lost many of its original features.

Using the residual funds from the sale of the original property, the Civic Society is now embarking on a complete restoration of the building.

However, to achieve our ambitions, we also need additional funds that will be used to restore the building’s ashlar stone frontage, create an attractively landscaped, railed forecourt including a curved ramp to the front door, and equip the building with everything from chairs and tables to kitchen appliances and audio-visual facilities.

Which is why we asking for your help.

The Society’s aim is to make Parmoor both an exemplar for the restoration of other heritage buildings and a centre of excellence for education and debate on local heritage and history – the latter through making it available for Cheltenham’s many voluntary groups, ‘Friends’ organisations, students and others to use.

In this way, Lord Parmoor’s original gift to the Civic Society will really be made to blossom by spreading its benefits much wider and generating a long-lasting resource for the wider community.

See the Parmoor page on our website.
