This September we're raising awareness of the extra costs families face when travelling to hospital for a child's cancer treatment.
On average, this is a 60 mile round trip, costing families over £180 a month, and can continue for years following a child's diagnosis. Other expenses such as food and hospital carparking build up. This happens at a time when parents have had to give up work or reduce hours to care for their unwell child. Plunging many families into debt.
Nearly all children diagnosed with cancer in our region will travel to either Nottingham Children's Hospital or Leicester Children's Hospital. For many families this a long drive for sometimes daily treatment. After initial diagnosis our Northampton families often continue treatment at Northampton General Hospital. PASIC has Support Workers at all three hospitals, providing much-needed practical, financial and emotional support.
STEPtember is a virtual distance challenge. Walk/run/cycle the distance between these regional hospitals. Notts Children's Hospital - Leic Children's Hospital - Northampton General. A total distance of 75 miles/120km. Anywhere you like. During the month of September.
Don't worry, if 75 miles sounds like a lot, Nottingham to Leicester Children's Hospitals is 30 miles - that's just 1 mile a day! Or, if you're feeling really ambitious, our higher target of 150 miles is there and back!
Pick your distance (30, 75 or 150 miles) and STEP UP for STEPtember.
