Many people in prison have often come from chaotic lifestyles and a background of deprivation, exclusion, abuse and violence coupled with low self-esteem and self-worth. 325 people died in prison in the year to September 2018. Of this number, a quarter took their own lives. Prison isn't easy and surviving post-release can be even harder.
2makeit is a charity that helps rehabilitate prisoners and ex-prisoners by offering them creative expression through programmes centred on music and the arts: learning how to collaborate and create, inspiring them to lead more productive and positive lives whilst in jail, and law-abiding lives on release. A vital part of our work is that it continues in the community. Supporting people to re-build their lives on release is crucial in reducing the risk of re-offending. Support can be just being there for a conversation when needed, continuing support for creative activities from art to music to provide something to do, and individual and peer mentoring that might help an individual get back into work.
We believe that rehabilitation and personal change come through collaboration, especially when two or more people engage in a creative endeavour, hence our name: 2makeit.
2makeit has supported Paul for quite a while now. When he was first released he faced many challenges ranging from accommodation issues to poor health and just trying to come to terms with life on the out. He is now living a much more stable life with a place to live, a positive support network and the healthcare he needs. Despite his daily challenges, Paul has resolved to help to raise funds for 2makeit so the charity can continue to help others the way he was helped.
You've helped me more than anyone in my life. Thank you for everything you've done.
With the blessing of his healthcare team he will be walking the 5K park run in Burgess Park, Camberwell on 24th August to raise funds for 2makeit in what he hopes will be the first of many such sponsored events to support 2makeit.
Update: Paul successfully completed his first fundraising event for 2makeit on Saturday 24th August meeting so many supportive people along the way. Thank you to everyone who has supported Paul and 2makeit so far. We are still open for donations!
