Story
Pembrokeshire’s coastline should be for everyone.
Across 17 locations in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, beach wheelchairs help people of all ages and abilities experience the freedom, wellbeing, and joy that our beaches provide. For many, these specially designed wheelchairs are more than equipment, they are a lifeline to independence, dignity, connection, and treasured moments with loved ones.
In 2025 alone, the scheme has already been used more than 900 times.
Families have been able to enjoy days on the beach together. Individuals with mobility challenges have been able to reconnect with nature. Some people have even used the service to access the coastline during end-of-life care, creating precious memories in places they love most.
Sadly, on Tuesday 26th May, two specialist tyres and an arm were stolen from one of the beach wheelchairs, causing around £600 worth of damage. This single act wiped out the equivalent of all donations received for the scheme last year.
This was not simply petty theft.
When a beach wheelchair is taken out of circulation, someone loses access to experiences many of us take for granted, feeling the sand beneath their feet, hearing the waves up close, spending meaningful time outdoors with family and friends.
The reality is that keeping this service running comes at a significant cost. These costs include annual servicing for all 17 locations costs, alongside travel costs to transport equipment between sites, plus essential staff time to maintain and coordinate the scheme, insurance, repairs and equipment upgrades.
We are asking for your support to help repair the damaged wheelchair and keep this vital service available for everyone who needs it.
Every donation, no matter the size, will go towards:
- Repairs to damaged equipment
- A replacement piece of equipment
- Secure storage to help protect equipment from future theft and damage
- Servicing and maintenance of beach wheelchairs
- Transportation of equipment between locations for
- Staff support to keep the scheme running safely and effectively
- Insurance costs to safeguard the scheme
Your kindness can help ensure that no one is denied the chance to experience Pembrokeshire’s incredible coastline.
Thank you for helping us protect accessibility, inclusion, and dignity for all.
