The Plantation Wood Ellesmere Trust are a community group that were established to take over the management and ownership of a large area of woodland just outside the beautiful town and mere of Ellesmere in Shropshire after it was kindly gifted by the Grosvenor estate in 2017.
The woodland has been used by local people for over 100 years and as allotments and orchards in both world wars. It is also an important visitor link and amenity and forms the main route between the canal and the mere. It is an important resource for recreation and mental health and is used significantly by local people for walking.
As part of the management plan we recently had a tree survey carried out which identified around 40 trees which need attention, some require felling because they are dead or impinging on healthy trees and the remainder need pruning to make them safe. We hold the biodiversity and conservation of the wood in the highest regard and all work will be done in a sensitive manner with woodpiles created and dead logs left etc in order to provide wildlife habitat.
The initial quote for the work is around £8000. We have a local company, Lander Forestry, helping us to reduce the costs by carrying out some work with a team of volunteers but the overhead pruning work will still cost in the region of £6000.
In order to keep this precious resource in its pristine condition and to enable its continued use by the community we are always fundraising and any contributions you feel able to make are gratefully received.
