Refurbish Porthleven Public Hall for our 100th Anniversary

We've not refurbished the Public Hall since the 1990's and as our centenary approaches, now is the time to renew and refresh our wonderful hall.

Porthleven Public Hall was gifted to the people of Porthleven in 1927 and has been at the heart of the community ever since. 400 people come through our doors every week to access community support, join in with clubs and activities, and celebrate the events that are important to them.

Story

The Hall hasn’t had major work since the 1990s, and a recent Fire Risk Assessment highlighted serious areas of non-compliance that we need to address - some of them as soon as possible. Much of the Hall is also just feeling its age. Our beautiful wooden floors are original to the building and are worn and slippery, with many deep gouges and marks. The interior walls and carpets show the signs of a well-used and long life.

Our chairs are not up to current fire regulation standards, and new, more modern chairs and tables (that can be easily moved and stored) would give more flexibility for the Hall’s varied uses. The groups that use the Hall regularly have frustrations with our aged sound system playing up, as do we when we use it for our Community Hub and other community activities.

Our 100th anniversary feels like the right time for doing this work - beyond the need that is essential for fire safety, it is a way of marking a milestone in the Hall’s long history of community service and equipping it for the future.

Quotes from our Community Hub Users:

“Since the Hub opened, my friends and I have really used it and enjoyed it. In fact, over the months it has become a very important and welcome part of our lives. The team who run it are just the best—so kind; they really look after us with food and care, and they do special events for us like quizzes, Easter events, lots of crafts, and they even had a wreath-making event at Christmas which was so much fun and so well attended. I can’t thank them enough for all they do; it’s one of the best things that has happened to the village. A safe, friendly, welcoming place for all ages to meet. We all love it.” Angie

“I attended the hub when they had Healthy Cornwall with them and had a free health MOT where my blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight were all checked. I was so happy being able to do this here, rather than trying to make an appointment to see my doctor. And it was less intimidating here.” CV

Quotes from our Regular Hirers:

“I just wanted to say how valuable the Porthleven Hall is. Having lived in Porthleven for the past 2 years, I have struggled to feel part of the community, but since holding regular events at the Hall, this has begun to change. I have also noticed a beautiful sense of community developing within my sessions, between the people who are attending, who perhaps didn't know eachother before. I'm very grateful to be able to use the space, and that it's such a brilliant venue - a good size, well maintained, good facilities, etc. Thank you!” Kia

“It is a place where we can meet, socialise, enjoy activities, crafts, speakers and musical entertainment. We are so lucky to have it, it is warm, comfortable, has a kitchen (tea and biscuits very important). We have been meeting here for many years and hopefully many more to come.” Porthleven Companions

“Porthleven Judo Kwai have been hiring the Public Hall in Porthleven for almost fifty years. The Hall is always kept clean, tidy, good value with all amenities that we need. Enough room to store our kit, central to the village, and ready to find. A great place to hire, with a good, helpful committee running it. We are very happy to hold our club there every week.” Porthleven Judo Kwai

We need to raise between £60-70K and have applied to over 20 different trusts for a grant. We are also approaching local businesses in Porthleven to see if they will sponsor some of our items needed. We are adament we are not putting our hire charges up to make money that way as PPH is for our community.

Can you help us keep the legacy of PPH alive for another 100 years? Everything given goes directly to the project.
