Fundraising to support King's research into preventable deaths

The Preventable Deaths Tracker is the first independent platform that collects, organises and analyses information from coroners, turning individual tragedies into evidence to inform policy, healthcare and save lives.

King’s has been named the 31st best university in the world and 5th best in the UK in the QS World University rankings 2026. As we look towards our 200th anniversary, King's vision is to make the world a better place through our excellence in teaching, research and service to society.

Story

Support research that helps save lives

Every year, around one in five deaths are considered avoidable in England and Wales. Yet there is no national system for systematically learning from these deaths and ensuring lessons are shared widely. Coroners investigate these deaths and write Prevention of Future Deaths (PFD) reports when action could prevent similar tragedies, but this valuable information has often remained fragmented and underused.

At King's College London, Dr Georgia Richards and her team are working to change that.

With the support of donors, King's has recruited and developed a talented team of early-career researchers who are transforming thousands of coroners' reports into a powerful evidence base for research and public benefit. Their work has accelerated the analysis of PFD reports, expanded research capacity and created valuable opportunities for the next generation of researchers to develop their skills and expertise.

This research underpins the Preventable Deaths Tracker, an independent platform that collects, organises and analyses published PFD reports. By making this information more accessible, it helps researchers, clinicians and policymakers identify patterns, understand risks and explore opportunities to prevent future harm.

Behind this work is a very small, yet dedicated research team at King's. Philanthropic support will enable these researchers to continue building and analysing the evidence, developing new insights and ensuring that lessons from individual tragedies can contribute to wider understanding and meaningful change.

By supporting this campaign, you will help King's researchers continue their work to understand preventable deaths, generate evidence for change, and improve public safety. This support will help sustain the research capacity, expertise and analysis that underpin projects such as the Preventable Deaths Tracker.

Together, we can support pioneering research, develop future research talent and help ensure that lessons from the past can contribute to a safer future.

Thank you for supporting this life-saving research.
