Story
1 in 5 girls in the UK take days off school during their periods due to a lack of access to products, which is seriously impacting their education.
Financial hardship is now affecting over 21% of women and girls during their period, resulting in work-day absence, mental health issues, physical issues, and an increase in the stigma of menstrual health.
Project Mislif Hapus was launched in Wales in direct response to addressing the stigma and issues faced by those living in Wales.
DFG UK lead Delyth Pannett and Young Women’s Health Activist Molly Fenton (Love Your Period) have spent the past few months organising this project to get products to as many people as possible who don’t have access to the free scheme.
Children’s/family centers that don’t qualify under the council, food banks that can’t keep up with demand, and MS/councilors who work with some of these organizations closely. Distributions are being organised across Wales and applications for kits are welcomed.
We made a great dent over Christmas, delivering 200 'Hybrid' kits to 4 different locations across South Wales. This has also resulted in a number of partnership distributions in England.
We hope this project will
- Shatter the stigma of menstruation and address the taboos
- Reach that all menstruators in need, including those labeled as 'hard to reach.'
- Bring the resources of two organisations to have double to impact with collaboration.
- Support menstrual health education and, ultimately the education of students
- Provide a community.
- Bridge generational gaps, needed now more than ever.
- Teach skills to those wanting to take part.
- Reduce the amount of waste by introducing washable kits.
- Be UK-wide.
Let's make this a world where periods are not a problem.
