Story

Harley and Hazel are in need of urgent dental work. This is going to cost a minimum of £300 each to resolve this issue.

As rabbits teeth are constantly growing it is so important to notice the signs of dental disease and how to prevent it. These girls were fed on a diet of muesli which has played a huge part in them developing dental disease.

Symptoms of dental disease:

-Drooling

-Loss of appetite

-Weeping eyes

-Bumpy jaw

-Tooth grinding

It is crucial your rabbits are fed a healthy diet which consists of 85% hay and they are given natural, wooden toys and chews to keep their teeth short. Some rabbits sadly have naturally bad teeth due to bad breeding and genetics. For example Netherland Dwarf and Lops are especially susceptible to dental issues.

Sadly this is a common occurrence amongst rabbits that come to the rescue which have been fed the incorrect diet and not had regular checks at the vets.

Thousands of rabbits are bought on a whim, without any research or understanding of their complex needs. Baxter is a prime example of this.

Baxter is just 2 years old and ever since he was surrendered to us, he’s suffered terribly with his health and has been back and forth from the vets.

Last week he was seen by exotic specialists and diagnosed with entropion. This is a painful condition where the eyelids grow inwards and continuously rub the eye. In Baxter’s case, one eye is more severe than the other but sadly both are affected and are causing painful ulcers and infection.

The only way to treat this is surgery. Part of his eyelid margin on both eyes will need to be rolled back out and surgically corrected in order for them to resume a normal position. This surgery comes at a huge cost of over £1000!
