The Prison Reform Trust aims to create a just, humane and effective penal system. We do this by conducting research into the prison system and conditions, informing prisoners, staff, the media and the wider public of our findings and campaigning for reform among MPs, peers and government officials.

Story

Prison Reform Trust X HMP Liverpool Marathon

Following two hugely successful events at HMP Brixton and HMP Newhall, featured in Runner’s World and Men’s Health (“RUN FOR REFORM: RACING INSIDE UK PRISONS” – David Smyth, March 2026 editions), the Prison Reform Trust is proud to partner with HMP Liverpool Physical Education Instructors to host the a full marathon inside a British prison.

This project is about far more than running. It is about hope, dignity, rehabilitation, and giving people the chance to believe in themselves again.

The programme will provide participants with:

A structured training programme designed to improve both physical and mental wellbeing.

Sessions with local running experts offering motivation, guidance, and practical coaching.

A buddy scheme connecting each runner with members of the UK running community for mentorship, encouragement, and fundraising support.

The opportunity to take part in an unforgettable marathon event day and medal ceremony.

Participants from previous events described the experience as life-changing:

"There was a unity and togetherness that came out of this from the training right up to event day. In those two hours I felt free, I felt connected to everyone beside me. I am proud of myself. My family are proud of me.”

“I cannot recall the last time I was out in fresh air for this long. I came to the gym about 8.15am and left about 5pm. This never happened before. I forgot I was in prison for the day… The ceremony was very emotional to me. The Governor, prison staff, members of the public and the prisoners were all called out by our first names – no titles or labels mentioned – to collect our medals. I felt so normal and human.”

Projects like this only happen because people choose to support them.

Your donation will help provide coaching, equipment, mentoring, and opportunities that encourage rehabilitation, connection, and positive change. Every contribution helps participants build confidence, improve wellbeing, and feel part of something bigger than themselves.

By giving, you are not just supporting a marathon, you are supporting second chances, community, and the belief that people can move forward.
