ACT NOW FOR AKKAR…
On January 13th 2024, the camps in Akkar, Northern Lebanon were struck with flash floods causing 9000 individuals to become further displaced.
Lebanon houses 1.5 million Syrian refugees as of October 2023 (arabcenterdc.org) with 90% unable to meet their basic needs, this flooding is detrimental in the winter months.
Women and children are seeking temporary refuge in mosques and water supplies have been contaminated causing further strain and food poverty for Syrian families.
£130 Winter Kit - Provides blankets, heating oil, scarf, hat, gloves and jackets.
Since 2019, Lebanon has been facing an unprecedented and multifaceted economic, financial, social and health crisis (LCRP, 2023)1. The local currency lost 49% of its value between October 2021 and October 2022 and more than 94% since the start of the crisis.
Furthermore, subsidies on basic services were removed resulting in significant price increase of food, fuel, health, transport, communications and others. At the same time, the unemployment rate has increased from 11% in 2018- 2019 to 30% in 2022. In August 2022, the average monthly wage among Lebanese residents covered 29% of the Survival Minimum Expenditure Basket (SMEB) while the income of Syrian refugee households corresponded to 21% of the SMEB (IPC, 2022)2. Consequently, these vulnerable communities have been deeply affected by a sharp increase in poverty, gaps in critical supply chains and limitations on access to food, healthcare, education and other basic services.
