Refugee Support is on the ground in Türkiye in the wake of the recent earthquake. Co-founder, Paul Hutchings, said:
Aside from the usual logistical and bureaucratic challenges, I've often found myself overwhelmed by the scale of the devastation: Crumbling buildings as far as the eye can see, and TWO MILLION people now living in tents and temporary accommodation.
We are working in towns surrounding Gazientep which have been partially destroyed, as well as the city of Antakya, which lies in ruins.
One of the most pressing problems right now is the lack of available toilets and showers. There are signs of increasing health issues, putting vulnerable people at even greater risk. We've partnered with a local women's cooperative to distribute essential hygiene items. The coop is already providing cooked mealsso our work supplements theirs and answers a pressing need.
As we spend more time in the region, it's become clear that people in remoter areas do not have access to basics like food. We are the first aid workers to arrive in a number of villages, where the need for food essentials is greatand Ramadan is about to begin.
In order to provide essential food and hygiene items support to the worst affected people, we need to raise £30,000 by 9th April.
