Response Ice Bucket Challenge

Organised by Response Giving

The Ice Bucket Challenge returns and this time, we're doing it for mental health. Take part today and #FreezeforaReason.

At Response, we are a charity dedicated to transforming lives through mental health support and housing. We deliver life-changing care and practical help to those who need it most. Together, we can achieve change.

Story

The Ice Bucket Challenge is back, and this time we're focusing on mental health. It’s a fun, bold way to raise awareness, spark conversations, and raise funds for mental health support services.

Here’s how to get involved:

- Grab a bucket and fill it with ice-cold water – the colder, the better!

- Set up your camera (or ask a friend to film you).

- Say a few words to the camera about why you’re Freezing for a Reason. You can use our script below, or speak from the heart – sharing your personal connection to mental health makes a real difference.

- Tip the bucket over your head or ask a friend to do it (This could be their chance to get you back for that time you stole their last chicken nugget, or let you copy their homework 😉)

- Post your video on social media – don’t forget to tag us @responseorg so we can see and share it!

- Nominate 3 friends to take on the challenge next.(Now it's your chance for payback 😉)

- Make a donation to support mental health awareness and services.

Suggested Script:

"I’m taking on the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness and support for mental health with Response. Mental health matters to me because [insert your reason]. I’m nominating [name 1], [name 2], and [name 3] to take on the challenge next. Let’s keep the conversation going and support those who need it most!"

Staying Safe While Taking Part:

We're so thankful you're joining the movement to support mental health, but your own health and wellbeing must come first. Please read the advice below before taking on the Ice Bucket Challenge:

- No pressure. You should never feel forced to take part. If the challenge isn’t for you – that’s absolutely fine. You’re still supporting the cause just by spreading the word and you can still donate to our JustGiving page if you want to!

- Put your health first. If you have underlying health conditions such as high blood pressure, a history of stroke, heart problems, or respiratory issues, it’s best not to use ice-cold water. There are safer, creative alternatives – check out our ideas below!

- One freeze is enough. Please don’t repeat the challenge multiple times as regular exposure to icy water can be harmful.

- Pick a safe space. Choose a non-slippery surface and have towels or dry clothes ready.

- Avoid breathing in water. Be careful not to inhale or speak as you pour the bucket.

- Respect others. If you nominate someone who chooses not to participate, please support their decision without pressure.

Looking After the Planet

- Reuse water. Make ice from already-used (but safe) water – like cooled bathwater or collected rainwater.

- Water your garden. Catch the melting ice in a container and use it later for houseplants or your garden.

- Ditch the water entirely. Want to stay dry? Tip something else over your head – old socks, foam, confetti, or even lawn clippings. It’s all in the spirit of fun and creativity!

Whether you’re going icy or eco, thank you for raising awareness and standing up for better mental health. Every challenge helps us reach more people who need support.
