Story

Help Us #RestoreTheRoof of Drie Gewels

Nestled in the heart of Stellenbosch, the Drie Gewels building has stood as a quiet witness to over a century of stories. Since the Sustainability Institute (SI) purchased the land in 1999 and lovingly restored this heritage gem, it has become more than just a structure — it has become a home for learning, connection and transformation.

Over the years, hundreds have passed through its doors. Some stayed when it was a guesthouse, enjoying long-table lunches and evening gatherings. Others, like students, teachers, and visitors, have spent countless hours inside its classrooms — growing, sharing, and shaping their futures within its historic walls.

Now, after 111 years, this grand old building needs our help. Its roof — a critical part of its structure — requires urgent restoration. Without it, the safety and comfort of those who rely on this space for learning and community are at risk.

Replacing the roof is no small task; it’s a nearly R1 million project. That’s why we’re launching our #RestoreTheRoof campaign, with a goal of raising R300 000 by August 2025.

Every rand makes a difference. Whether you give R50, R500, or R5 000, your contribution will go directly towards preserving this building and the purpose it continues to serve. And if you can’t donate, please share this message — spread the word and help us reach those who can.

Since its restoration, Drie Gewels has worn many hats:

A guesthouse for Stellenbosch University students and travellers,

A venue for shared meals and community events,

Classrooms for university and Agroecology students,

Office and learning spaces for the SI and Indaba Institute,

And today, a vibrant school for learners from the Stellenbosch Waldorf School.

Drie Gewels is a living example of how old buildings can support new beginnings. As a heritage site, it’s a sustainable asset — a reminder that the greenest building is one that already exists.

Historic buildings are more than bricks and mortar. They’re vessels of memory, culture, and identity. They teach us how people lived, worked, and dreamed. With your help, Drie Gewels can continue telling its story — and hosting many more.

Join us. Support the campaign. Help us #RestoreTheRoof — and preserve the past while building the future.
