Restore Sight by Air

Campaign by Aviation for Good

A simple 15-minute operation can restore someone's sight—but only if specialist medical teams can reach them. Help Aviation for Good fund life-changing flights that bring surgeons, nurses and hope to remote communities in South Africa.

Aviation for Good uses the power of aviation to bridge isolation and opportunity. We fund life-changing projects that deliver healthcare, education, disaster relief and hope to communities that are hardest to reach. Helping aviation become a powerful force for positive change.

Story

Imagine knowing that a simple 15-minute operation could restore your sight — but having no realistic way to access the specialist care you need. living with blindness when the treatment already exists.

For nearly 1,000 people waiting for cataract surgery in South Africa, this is their reality.

Patients often wait months, sometimes years, for cataract surgery. As their eyesight deteriorates, many lose their independence, their livelihoods and the ability to care for their families. Without treatment, many will remain needlessly blind.

The surgeons are ready. The hospital is ready. The patients are waiting.

Aviation is what connects them.

Aviation for Good is partnering with Mercy Air South Africa, our trusted aviation delivery partner, to enable monthly humanitarian flights that transport volunteer eye surgeons and nurses from Johannesburg to Donald Fraser Hospital in Thohoyandou.

Once there, they establish a temporary eye theatre and perform life-changing cataract surgery for patients who would otherwise have little or no access to specialist care.

With aviation, a 15-minute operation can reverse that loss almost immediately — restoring not only sight, but independence, dignity and the opportunity to participate fully in family and community life again.

We're raising £16,925 to fund five outreach flights, helping bring specialist medical care to patients who might otherwise remain beyond its reach.

£3,385 funds one complete outreach flight, enabling volunteer surgeons and nurses to restore sight to around 20 patients.

£16,925 funds the remaining five outreach missions for 2026, helping around 100 people regain their sight.

By supporting this campaign, you're helping turn isolation into access and blindness into sight — bridging the gap between isolation and opportunity.
