Story

The Rhino Rewild Story

Rhino Rewild is an ambitious 10-year plan to rescue and rewild 2,000 white rhino and renew the wild habitats they require.

African Parks is a conservation organization managing 23 protected areas in 13 countries across Africa. African Parks rescued 2,000 southern white rhino, almost 15% of the remaining global population, with the purchase of the largest captive rhino breeding operation in September 2023. These 2,000 rhinos were in jeopardy of being poached or sold off as part of a liquidation process and were at serious risk of being lost to conservation forever.

We purchased the operation with one clear intent: to rewild these rhino over the next 10 years to well-managed protected areas in Africa, to derisk the species, and to contribute to healthy, functioning, wild ecosystems.

Our goal is to translocate up to 300 rhino annually to multiple, well-managed protected areas across Africa over the next 10 years. We are establishing multiple release sites within our existing network of managed parks, while working with other conservation organisations, communities, and governments to establish additional sites, ensuring the rhinos will be protected in their new, wild homes.

What does your donation do?

When you donate to African Parks’ Rhino Rewild initiative you are helping send 2,000 rhino home – back to the wild – where each one can realise their conservation value, contribute to healthy functioning ecosystems supporting both people and wildlife, and live wild and free.

Once back in the wild, these rhinos can help restore ecosystems, increase biodiversity, mitigate negative impacts of climate change, preserve grasslands, and even help generate revenue for local communities.

This work is challenging and costly, but allowing these rhino to reclaim their place in nature is a lasting legacy to which you can contribute.

100% of your donation is going to help support these rhino, every step along their journey. You are contributing to the largest, multi-national wildlife translocation in human history, and you will leave a lasting impact on the African continent for people and wildlife.

Any amount can help get a rhino to its wild home. You can also sponsor the entire costs of moving one rhino starting at:

• £1,000 ($1,350): will cover the cost of one rhino being moved by road within South Africa;

• £3,750 ($4,600): will cover the cost of one rhino being moved by road within Southern Africa;

• £38,750 ($48,000): will cover the cost of a rhino being flown to a location in Eastern or Central Africa
