The Rise scholarship programme, launched by Auckland Hospital Foundation in partnership with Auckland City Hospital's Nursing Development Unit Manawa Awhi, aims to remove the barriers that prevent New Zealanders pursuing and completing a degree in nursing or midwifery.
Your donation today will help build a stronger and more diverse nursing and midwifery workforce.
Rise scholarship recipient Calvin Fuimaono Aiesi Naoia is undertaking a three-year Bachelor of Nursing degree and is the first person in his family to attend tertiary education.
Calvin says:
A few years ago, I was accepted into university, but I was unable to take up the opportunity as I became a main caregiver in my family. Despite also being diagnosed with underlying health issues and undergoing surgery myself, I have not let these barriers stop me from working hard and caring for others.
It is my personal dream and ambition to become a registered nurse in New Zealand. I was born to care, and this is what I'm able to give back to my family and my community. I feel honoured to receive the scholarship, which helps make this possible for me.
The Rise scholarship programme helps nursing students like Calvin successfully complete their degrees, rather than being forced to give up due to financial or personal pressures.
Like many students, Calvin had to move from full-time to part-time work to pursue his nursing qualification. With a reduced income while training and caring for his family, Calvin's scholarship assists with study and accommodation costs, ensuring his success.
Rise scholarships are unique; they enable each student to use their funding where they need it most, whether accessing clinical placements and resources, accommodation, childcare, travel, parking or tuition fees. Meanwhile, the hospital's Manawa Awhi team provides wrap-around services to support scholars with mentoring, practical and emotional support on top of the financial assistance.
Post studies, our graduates are employed by Auckland City Hospital and receive opportunities to build their careers in New Zealand's largest teaching hospital.
By donating today, you will help to change the lives of aspiring healthcare professionals, their whānau and our communities. You will help people like Calvin fulfil their passion to care for others and support their families.
Every dollar of your donation will support someone's dream to become a nurse or midwife. Please help us create a future where new health professionals can rise to care for the health of all our communities.
