Story
The Fiji Society UK, in partnership with British Fijians serving in the Royal Marines, champions an ongoing initiative connecting the River Thames in London with the Rewa River in Fiji. This partnership uses participation in the Great River Race to highlight the importance of rivers as lifelines for communities, ecosystems, and cultures in both countries.
We are committed to sustainability, raising awareness of the environmental challenges facing the Thames and the Rewa, including pollution, sewage overflow, and the impacts of climate change. Through this partnership, we engage in knowledge-sharing, riverbank clean-ups, water quality monitoring, and educational activities that empower communities to care for their waterways.
We celebrate cultural connections by strengthening bonds between the UK and Fiji, showcasing our shared stories, dual heritage, and the rivers that shape our lives.
Both the Thames and the Rewa are vital to their communities and face similar environmental threats that require collective action. By connecting these rivers, we honour their importance and work together for a sustainable future.
For the first time ever, the Fijian Royal Marines will take part in the 2025 Great River Race — rowing 21.6 miles along the Thames, from Millwall to Richmond.
This race honours 55 years of Fijian independence and celebrates the proud contributions of Fijians in the UK and British Armed Forces.
