Story
Roots is the only year-round, nature-based mental health support service in Luton
Joe* spent years trapped in cycles of mental health relapses, struggling to leave his home. When he first came to Roots in 2016, he was so overwhelmed by kindness that he almost turned around. The team encouraged him to stay. He did.
Joe hasn't had a mental health relapse since.
Today, Joe attends Roots several days a week. His confidence has grown – he's passed his driving test, explored new places, and now welcomes new members because he knows how terrifying that first step from isolation can feel. Joe is no longer alone.
"Roots is a wonderful place, and I feel blessed to be able to come here.”
This Christmas, we’re raising £1,000 to keep our doors open for people who feel lonely.
Loneliness hits hardest at Christmas. Please help us be there for the 600 people we keep connected. For many, we are the only social contact they have outside their homes. As one member put it simply:
"I wouldn't be alive today without Roots."
We are 100% reliant on donations. For over 12 years, every seed planted, every meal shared, every friendship formed has started with your support. Help us show people they are not alone.
Your gift can make a difference:
• £10 could fund seeds and garden supplies for members to enjoy nature, even in winter.
• £25 could cover materials for festive creative sessions where people build confidence and friendships.
• £50 could support travel costs for those socially isolated with limited mobility to stay connected.
• £100 could contribute to dinners at our Christmas gathering for people who would otherwise spend the day alone.
Every pound raised, up to and beyond our £1000 target, will go to SIG Penrose Roots for materials and sessions to support members through community-based recovery activities.
Your support creates ripple effects across Luton.
While members heal and grow, they give back—donating thousands of kilograms of fresh food to local food banks and volunteering thousands of hours in local conservation. By supporting Roots, you're investing in a healthier, more connected Luton for everyone.
Please give today so someone, like Joe, has somewhere to turn this Christmas—and every day.
