Zambia has been grappling with low literacy levels in primary schools and many interventions have been made to arrest the falling literacy levels with minimal improvements. Children in Zambia are taught English literacy in Grade 3. There is a lack of access to relevant education resources and therefore gaps in Primary Teachers knowledge regarding literacy in English. This has a huge impact on children's ability to learn to read and write in English which in turn impacts their future education.
In collaboration with the Ministry of General Education in Zambia and Jolly Futures we are training all Grade 3 teachers in the Copperbelt Province in our contextualised Jolly Phonics Teaching Aid. Alongside this we are creating sustainable educational resources. We also partner with the Teaching Council for Zambia and other professional bodies to make relevant, accessible and impactful literacy CPD (Continuous Professional Development).
Beyond Ourselves Zambia has really helped me sharpen my skills in teaching phonics. The training I received from them built on my existing knowledge and has led to me teaching phonics with greater confidence and effectiveness. Thank you BOZ!
