Story

Imagine having to leave your country and all that is familiar to you, and arriving in the UK to a different culture, an unfamiliar language and sometimes to a hostile environment.

Refugee Support Devon works with refugees to rebuild their lives in safety in Devon.

Your donation will contribute to our work, and particularly will enable our clients to better participate and access opportunities to further their careers, education and future in Devon.

For example, our Refugees as Medical Professionals (RAMP) project is making a huge impact to people's lives. This project supports medical professionals to requalify to UK standards; many of whom then work for the NHS.

It costs the NHS over £200,000 to train a doctor, but it costs a fraction of that to help refugee medical professionals to reconnect with their careers in the UK.

This is just one example of the powerful impact you can have on refugees in Devon.

The difference you could make...

£5 would pay for a refugee doctor’s one month subscription to an online Medical English course

£10 would pay for an out-of-town client’s bus fare to attend lessons in Exeter

£30 would buy a specialist text book for a refugee nurse

£320 would pay for a refugee doctor to take a specialist English exam for medical professionals

A success story:

Arina had just completed her medical training in Ukraine when the war broke out in 2022. She had to abandon her career and all that she held dear and start a new life in Torquay. Arina’s passion was to become a gynaecologist and she had resigned herself to putting her dreams on hold with an uncertain future ahead of her. Until that is she discovered RSD’s RAMP project. She’s now taking specialist English language classes and has already had a few clinical placements in a Torquay hospital.

Her reaction?

I was extremely happy to be in a gynaecology clinic and was very excited to see how it all works here. I was a little bit upset at first as I have already lost two years, but everything happens for the better – I need to stay on target now.
