River Thames Boat Project provides therapeutic cruises for people of all ages with disabilities and older people, and environmental education for young people. We are a well-established charity with over 30 years history and in June 2021, were honoured to receive The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. This is the equivalent of an MBE for volunteers. We have 2 wheelchair accessible community boats, Thames Venturer a converted Dutch barge which is over 100 years old and Thames Discoverer, our specially designed river cruise boat. On our boats, we provide a sense of calm, a fresh perspective and a boost to mental health and well-being, as well as educating about rivers and the challenges they face. We operate from Teddington and Kingston and cruise upstream towards Shepperton. Our education days take place at Teddington Lock. We have a small staff team of 4 and over 70 amazing volunteers. It is the commitment and warm, caring and inclusive approach of the staff and volunteers that makes time on the boats very special and memorable.

Story

River Thames Boat Project has been making special time on the river possible for more than 30 years. Our two community boats Thames Venturer and Thames Discoverer are wheelchair accessible. We provide cruises for people of all ages with disabilities and older people as well as Environmental education days for Primary School children. We operate from Teddington and Kingston in South West London.

A small staff team and more than 70 volunteers support the charity, maintain the boats, deliver our activities and help with fundraising. In 2021, we were honoured to receive The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, the equivalent of an MBE for volunteers.

Being on our boats on the river provides a huge boost to mental and physical health and wellbeing. It's a safe and caring environment and provides the perfect tonic to the difficult times that have been experienced over the last two years with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Here's what our groups that we welcome onboard say:

RTBP is a wonderful gift to isolated people, disabled people and other members of the community longing for a breath of fresh air, to be in nature and to enjoy the companionship of volunteers. (Support group for older people)

It would take a month of learning in the classroom to achieve what the children have learnt in one day on 'School on the River' (Primary School teacher)

We rely on grants, donations and fundraising to subsidise the cost of our days on the river. The support is really appreciated. Our groups really benefit from their time with us on the river.

We're looking forward to lots of special time on the river in 2022!
