Martin's Final Lap: A 27-Year Career Ends Where It Matters Most
After nearly three decades as Kaleidoscope's CEO, Martin Blakebrough is retiring. But rather than quietly slipping off into the sunset with a carriage clock, he's decided to run from Heswall to Newport – essentially recreating his entire career journey on foot.
The route isn't accidental. Heswall houses Kaleidoscope's furthest service and only residential facility; Newport is where their Welsh services began. In between, Martin will pass many of the services he's helped establish. It's either deeply meaningful or an elaborate way to avoid clearing out his office – possibly both.
180 miles. A challenging terrain. Because apparently, treadmills are too mainstream
Why Running, Why Now?
Martin's been a runner for years, so this seemed more sensible than, say, interpretive dance. "I hope my efforts show people how proud we are to support the people we seek to serve," he says. He's also quick to point out that his challenge pales in comparison to what service users face daily – though we suspect he'll be singing a different tune around mile 40.
Martin is positively chuffed (and mildly terrified) at the thought of running through Wales, a country he credits with giving him so much. Whether that includes a fondness for hills remains to be seen, but his enthusiasm is infectious, even if his sports massage therapist is probably already booking a holiday.
What Kaleidoscope Actually Does
For over 25 years, Kaleidoscope has supported people struggling with drugs and alcohol. Not the glamorous bit of charity work, but arguably the most important. They work with people others have written off, providing hope where there wasn't any before.
Martin's farewell run will fund mobile harm reduction services in rural Wales – bringing help to places where none existed before. It's practical, unglamorous work that saves lives. The sort of thing Martin's spent his career championing.
How You Can Help
Whether you know Martin personally, have worked with Kaleidoscope, or just admire someone mad enough to run across Wales at retirement age, your support matters.
Every donation helps – whether it's the price of a coffee or considerably more. You'll be supporting both Martin's slightly bonkers farewell and Kaleidoscope's continuing work with people who desperately need it.
Sponsor Martin today. You'll be helping fund vital services, celebrating 27 years of inspiring leadership, and ensuring someone gets a very good story out of all this.
Plus, next time someone complains about their commute, you can mention you know someone who ran across Wales for charity.
