Service Adventure Anchorage

Mennonite Mission Network's Service Adventure program is designed for young adults ages 17-20. Through a 10-month service term (Aug-July), participants live together with unit leaders, serve with local nonprofit agencies, and connect with a church.

Mennonite Mission Network exists to lead, mobilize and equip the church to participate in holistic witness to Jesus Christ in a broken world. We envision every congregation and all parts of the church being fully engaged in mission—across the street, all through the marketplaces and around the world.

Story

As Alaska's largest city with 260,000 people, Anchorage's location along the Cook Inlet gives it a natural harbor alongside beautiful mountains. The Service Adventure unit house is located on a residential street toward the center of the city. Prince of Peace Mennonite Church has been a presence in Anchorage since 1989. Its more than 20 members sponsor the Anchorage Service Adventure unit, which began in February 1997. Service placements in Anchorage are varied and unique. Many participants have placements working with the homeless population in Anchorage, as the challenges faced by the homeless in Anchorage are substantial. Other participants work with children and youth, low-income families, abused women, the elderly, and the Bureau of Land Management.
