Story

This scholarship fund is being set up by the UK based education charity WORLDwrite in honor of Sadhvi Sharma who died in March 2021 aged just 39. The fund will provide annual paid internships for individuals interested in working with the charity and using film, TV and journalism to promote the best for humanity.

Last year the charity was able to provide three paid internships, two to young refugees from Ukraine Hleb and Vladlena and one to deserving young filmmaker Stephan De Barros. We know Sadhvi would approve of our assisting these deserving young people and her partner Fredrik was very supportive, match funding what we raised. This summer we hope to raise a further £10,000 and provide four more part-time paid internships. The four young people are Anandita Pelia, Edward Vear, Avgi Fasouli and Luca Moretto. They will all work as assistant producers and learn to edit, to produce our latest epic documentary entitled Making Common Cause, on the history of solidarity in the UK. They have all made their mark volunteering for our film project so far and are richly deserving of this opportunity. Their research and camerawork has already made its mark for our film, on the Grunwick dispute, the Spanish Civil War, the millworker’s opposition to slavery in the 1860’s and on men who supported the suffragettes.

More on Sadhvi.... In her early 20s, Sadhvi Sharma became a WORLDwrite volunteer. She helped develop and launch its film facility, worked on films in Ghana, the UK and India, became part of the staff team as volunteer coordinator and remained a vital member of the charity's management committee until her untimely death. Sadhvi's unfailing courage and commitment to the advancement of our common humanity saw her speaking up for modernization in Mumbai, challenging population control policies globally and campaigning for unfettered free speech and freedom in the UK. As an advocate of the most direct democracy possible, Sadhvi believed in the capacity of us all to improve our lot.

This scholarship fund will assist the above four individuals interested in following a similarly inspiring and fearless path by developing media skills as Sadhvi did, to share ideas with the world that will make it a better place for us all.

Thank you so much for your help and support in making Sadhvi's legacy matter.
