Gift of Knowledge & Forgotten Women has identified great safety and security concerns within the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox Bazar, Bangladesh. Traffickers are targeting and exploiting vulnerable people, in particular, women. Women are been lured into dangerous situations with false promises of work or a better life. They are being duped into situations of forced labour and sexual exploitation. Nearly a million refugees live in the camps. The dire conditions, misery and lack of opportunities make the people easy prey for traffickers.
Both Gift of Knowledge & Forgotten Women aims to create a safe space /centre for women and teenage girls. The centre will give women a voice, provide information, referral services and psycho-social counseling, in particular to those affected by gender based violence. The centre can also provide, skills training in literacy and numeracy, livelihood options, leadership and disaster preparedness as well as economic empowerment. One of its most important roles will be to raise awareness about the dangers within and surrounding the camps such as human trafficking. We will also aim to setup a crehe facility so that women with children can be facilitated.
