Story

UPDATE - 1 April 2021

We are amazed by the progress made to date towards our target value and would like to thank every single one of you who has contributed. Work is continuing apace as, in partnership with Freedom Leisure, we prepare to re-open the Centre to the public, with the following steps already taken to deliver a much-improved facility for our community:

> The Sports Hall has been deep-cleaned and decorated and a brand new floor has been installed.

> The Squash Court has been deep-cleaned, refurbished and decorated.

> Both the Sports Hall and Squash Court now have LED lighting.

> The Dance Studio floor has been re-sanded and sealed.

> Both air-conditioning and natural ventilation systems have been upgraded.

> The lift has been repaired to make the Centre accessible for all.

Our next target is to refurbish the changing rooms, which are desperately in need of attention. These are used solely by the local community and not the school so we cannot fund their refurbishment and we are wholly reliant on donations to complete this work.

At the time of writing we have secured almost £22,000 from a range of sources - most recently a fabulous £1,000 from the Tesco Bags of Help scheme and an extremely generous £10,000 from the Sandwich Toll Bridge Fund! We also continue to benefit from the Dover Lotto, with a proportion of every ticket sold supporting our cause:

As thoughts turn to new horizons following a long and difficult year, we have never been more aware of the importance of good health and fitness. any help that you can give will ensure that this valuable facility continues to serve our community for many years to come. THANK YOU so much for your support.

Background to our campaign

On 28 May 2020 Sandwich Technology School became the new owners of Sandwich Sports and Leisure Centre. The Sports Hall floor had deteriorated to a point where it was no longer safe to use and we were keen to reinstate the facilities - for both our students and the community.

The school is working hard with Freedom Leisure so that, in partnership with them, we can ensure:

> The Sandwich Sports and Leisure Centre can be used and enjoyed by all.

> The building continues to provide a service for the local community.

> The facilities are restored to a condition that is fit for purpose for all users.

There are substantial costs involved in re-opening the Centre - the building came with £250,000 worth of issues to be addressed and the Sports Hall was out of bounds for safety reasons. The school has committed to invest a significant amount of money to provide the students with high-quality facilities for their PE curriculum and Freedom Leisure is similarly determined to make the Sandwich Sports and Leisure Centre a going concern. However, the school has limited resources and Freedom Leisure is a not-for profit company that, like many other businesses, has been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Therefore, we are asking for your help. If every member of our School community was able to spare £10, that would bring in over £15,000 towards the cause. If residents of Sandwich and other parts of the local community helped too, who knows how much we could raise? We want to ensure that this valuable community asset is preserved for the good of everyone.

Thank you - every £ donated helps us towards re-opening this valuable community asset.
