Story
Marine mammals are one of the most threatened marine species groups globally, facing threats from human pressure like never before. Sea Watch Foundation have been monitoring these animals for more than 35 years, collecting data which is crucial to the protection of these species. However, few people are aware that many whales, dolphins, and porpoises can be spotted around our coasts, with more than 30 species recorded in British waters.
We work to understand the abundance, distribution and movements of these animals and provide this information to marine policy decision makers, influencing real change. Our data directly contributed to the establishment of the two SACs for bottlenose dolphins in Wales, the Scottish MPAs for minke whale, Risso’s dolphin and basking shark, and the harbour porpoise SACs across all of the UK.
We also raise much-needed public awareness of the presence of cetaceans in our seas. This is mainly through public events such as National Whale and Dolphin Watch and Orca Watch, which attract hundreds of volunteers from all around the UK and world each year.
Your donation will allow us to continue this important work to protect vulnerable whales and dolphins.
