The Kings Theatre is more than just a venue—it’s a testament to Gloucester’s love of live performance. A place rebuilt by volunteers, revived by the passion of local theatre companies, and carried forward by sheer determination. But now, after decades of resilience, we are facing our biggest fight yet.
Once a Salvation Army Citadel, then transformed into The Olympus Theatre by The Gloucester Operatic and Dramatic Society, this building has stood as a beacon of entertainment for generations. In 1985, it was left empty, at risk of being lost forever. But the theatre community refused to let that happen. Volunteers—ordinary people with extraordinary passion—rebuilt it from the ground up. They drove to Blackpool for seats, sourced materials from anywhere they could, even worked alongside prisoners and firefighters to create the theatre we know and love today.
It was saved before. Now, it needs saving again.
Due to urgent safety concerns, we have been forced to close our doors indefinitely. Without immediate repairs, Gloucester could lose its last remaining theatre.
We are a volunteer-run venue—we have no major funding, no wealthy benefactors, just a community that refuses to let this theatre die. But this time, we can’t do it alone.
