In October, Scotland's National Amputee Football team will take part in the inaugural European Amputee Football Nations League Group D Tournament, to be hosted in Fife.
More than 150 players and staff from the national teams of Azerbaijan, Albania, The Netherlands and Kosovo will come to face Scotland in the first event of this kind ever to be hosted in Scotland. The two-day tournament will take place on 28-29 October at the Dalgety Bay Sports and Leisure Centre in Fife. Teams will stay in Fife for three days, playing 10 matches across the Saturday and Sunday and the public is invited to attend for free to watch this dynamic, fast-paced and exciting sport in action.
The cost of hosting this tournament is £45,000 and Amputee Football Association is both fortunate and extremely grateful to its sponsors for their support - The Mackay Clinic, Bandrum Nursing Home, Fife Council, Fife Sport & Leisure Trust, Dalgety Bay Sport & Leisure Centre and Pheonix Decorating Scotland.
However, we are £8,000 short of meeting the costs to host this tournament and are dipping into our emergency reserves to do so.
We are appealing to the public to get behind the team to ensure we can successfully host the tournament and provide the chance of a lifetime for our players - and so that we can continue to do so in the future.
Amputee Football in Scotland is run by Amputee Football Association Scotland - a modest charity run by a handful of volunteers, set up in 2018 to provide amputees in Scotland with the opportunity to play football. Amputee Football Association Scotland is an official Game Leader organisation of Scottish Para-Football, the Scottish FA's national association in disability football.
The Scotland amputee national team has flourished in recent years and, following a successful international invitational tournament in November 2022 that saw Scotland clinch its first international wins, we will host Group D of the first ever European Amputee Football Nations League.
Fife was a fitting location not only for its abundance in excellent sporting facilities, but also due to it being home to Scotland amputee football player and former Scotland Paralympic medalist, Iain Matthew, who attributes much of his elite sporting success to the people of Fife.
The Nations League is run by the European Amputee Football Federation, the European governing body for amputee football, of which Amputee Football Association Scotland is a member.
